Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) A Key to Empowerment

Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) education is a vital aspect of empowering young girls, particularly in Nigeria. SRH education provides girls with accurate and comprehensive information about their bodies, reproductive rights, and healthy relationships. This knowledge enables them to make informed decisions about their sexual health, preventing unwanted pregnancies, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and gender-based violence.
SRH education also fosters autonomy, self-esteem, and confidence, allowing girls to navigate adolescence and adulthood with dignity. By understanding their reproductive rights, girls can advocate for themselves, challenge harmful gender norms, and pursue their educational and career goals without hindrance.
Moreover, SRH education has a positive impact on girls’ mental and physical well-being, reducing anxiety, depression, and risky behaviors. It also promotes healthy relationships, consent, and respect for oneself and others.
In Nigeria, where adolescent pregnancy and STIs are prevalent, SRH education is crucial. Educating young girls about SRH can break the cycle of poverty, promote gender equality, and empower them to reach their full potential.

Family Planning for Adolescent SRH

Growing up comes with a lot of challenges of which rapid physical and sexual change in our body is one of them. Family planning is an essential aspect of  sexual and reproductive health. Our young people need not family planning only for contraception but for advice about these rapid physical and sexual changes of growing up.

It is important to learn about oneself before indulging in one of the family planning methods without being judged for each of our needs has to be respected.

Sexual and Reproductive health is a paramount aspect of effective human life. Providing family planning advice to young people does not aim to promote having sex but help them protect their health which is among the fundamental human rights.

Young people ought to be empowered to make informed decisions about their sexual and reproductive lives which can be crucial to living.

Challenges with access to contraceptives

We all know it can be challenging to get access to these contraceptive methods as a young person especially in this part of the world. This is due to numerous socio-cultural and religious beliefs. There are lots of misconceptions among young people concerning their sexual and reproductive health which may lead to fear of using contraceptives or even feel shameful to seek counseling and advice. Again financial constraints can also hinder people from accessing some of these services. However, the WHO, WAHO in collaboration with several financiers and governments thrive to make these services as cheap as possible.
